AusRegistry International - Major Projects
ENUM
In May 2005, AusRegistry International was chosen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), to run and operate the Registry for the Australian ENUM Trial.
ENUM is the mapping of telephone numbers to domain names using Domain Name System (DNS) based architecture, in order to help facilitate such services as Voice over IP (VoIP). It allows network elements to find services on the Internet using only a telephone number. ENUM is simply the convergence of Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) to Internet Protocol (IP) Networks - phone numbers converted to Internet addresses. This allows end users to link one or more communications services to their telephone number, providing a single point of contact for services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), email, presence and instant messaging.
ENUM is also the title of RFC 2916, the approved protocol document that discusses the use of DNS for the storage of E.164 numbers and the available services connected to an E.164 number.
The Trial is likely to run for at least one year, with the option to extend into two, at the end of which the ACMA may designate a national ENUM administrator.
The trial will be broken into three stages:
Stage 1
Stage 1 will use E.164 numbers which have not yet been allocated for use by any Carriage Service Provider (CSP). The numbers will be
allocated by the ACMA to AusRegistry International for allocation to accredited Registrars. This stage will be limited in its allowance
to perform testing of the interaction between the PSTN and Internet networks. It will not support any to any connectivity that would
allow a PSTN user to use the number to make a call to another user on the internet. This stage will however support limited routing
of calls over private networks where the calls are routed via PABXs connected to Internet gateways.
Stage 2
Stage 2 will only proceed if the results of Stage 1 are that Trial participants and industry give significant commitment to a
commercial ENUM Registry in Australia. Acceptance of ENUM internationally will also play a part. Stage 2 will explore the issues
associated with already allocated non-geographic numbers (for example mobile numbers).
Stage 3
Stage 3 of the Trial is intended to explore the issues associated with using geographic E.164 numbers. This stage will only proceed
if it is considered appropriate to use geographic numbers for ENUM.
REC-Registry
The Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER) is a statutory authority established to administer the government's Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000. The objectives of the Act are to:
- Encourage the additional generation of electricity from renewable resources
- Reduce emission of greenhouse gases
- Ensure that renewable energy sources are ecologically sustainable
In 2005, AusRegistry International was awarded the tender to re-development and manage (Technical and User support) the REC Registry system until 2010. The REC (Renewable Energy Commision) Registry is a web site that is required by the Renewable Energy Electricity Act 2000 (the Act) and is dedicated to the creation, registration, transfer and surrender of Renewable Energy Certificates.
AusRegistry International is responsible for the following development, services and deliverables:
- provide detailed system designs
- develop new and existing functionality for the REC Registry
- migrate data, including mapping, transfer validation that define all aspects of the system including software, platform and architecture
- develop and provision an architecture platform, including the infrastructure necessary to support the software over the Internet for use by all system users
- Provide helpdesk services to ORER staff, REC Registry Users and the public via email, phone, fax and mail
- Provide ingoing system support including, data management, network security and system performance
- Provide system enhancement as requested by ORER
- Provide training to ORER administrative staff, including:
- Manuals and documentation
- Any material necessary to assist ORER staff to undertake effective industry briefing and and an initial round of industry training
- Provide bookkeeping services for the payment if fees associated with the REC Registry
